Media, Communications and Advocacy Coordinator

Job Purpose

The Media, Communications and Advocacy Coordinator will lead the development and implementation of International Alert’s media, communication and Advocacy strategy in Nigeria. The post holder will be responsible for media engagement, strategic messaging, branding, digital communication, and public relations to enhance the visibility and impact of Alert’s peacebuilding and advocacy initiatives. The role requires strong expertise in media relations, storytelling, content creation, branding, digital engagement, and public relations, as well as the ability to influence a broad range of stakeholders on conflict resolution, climate change, governance, and peacebuilding.

Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic Communication and Media Engagement

  • Develop and implement International Alert’s media, communications and advocacy strategy in Nigeria.
  • Lead strategic messaging efforts to amplify Alert’s peacebuilding and advocacy work.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with national and international media outlets.
  • Create and distribute press releases, op-eds, articles, and other media materials to increase visibility.
  • Monitor and analyze media coverage to refine communication strategies.
  • Maintain active media engagements with key media platforms per quarter.
  • Secure the publication of press releases or articles quarterly.
  • Achieve substantial increase in positive media coverage within one year.

Digital Communication and Content Development

  • Oversee the creation of engaging multimedia content, including reports, newsletters, blogs, and success stories.
  • Manage and grow International Alert’s digital platforms (website and social media).
  • Ensure consistent branding and messaging across all communication materials.
  • Lead the production of high-quality visual content, such as infographics and videos.
  • Drive audience engagement through innovative digital strategies.

Public Relations and Advocacy Campaigns

  • Organize press briefings, media roundtables, and public engagement events.
  • Strengthen partnerships with journalists, media houses, and influencers.
  • Support advocacy campaigns with strategic messaging and storytelling.
  • Develop advocacy materials, policy briefs, and media toolkits.
  • Conduct media stakeholder engagements 
  • Organize press briefings before major events

Project Reporting, Monitoring, and Evaluation

  • Track and measure the impact of communication initiatives using appropriate tools.
  • Ensure alignment of media and communication activities with program objectives and donor requirements.
  • Contribute to donor reports by documenting communication outputs and achievements.
  • Lead the development of communication impact assessments.
  • Submit timely communication reports to donors and stakeholders.
  • Develop and operationalise a media impact tracking system

Compliance, Capacity Building, and Knowledge Management

  • Ensure adherence to organizational policies, donor branding guidelines, and ethical standards.
  • Provide capacity-building training for project teams and partners on effective    communication strategies.
  • Develop media engagement guidelines and best practices.
  • Promote internal knowledge-sharing across the organization.

Contribution to Organizational Strategy and Growth

  • Represent International Alert in strategic forums related to media and communication.
  • Develop compelling communication materials for proposals.
  • Integrate communication strategies into project design in collaboration with program teams.

Travel requirements

  • Based in Abuja, with regular travel to project locations and media engagements across Nigeria.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Master’s degree in mass communication, journalism, public relations or related field
  • Minimum 7 years of experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role in media, strategic communication, or advocacy.
  • Strong knowledge of the media landscape in Nigeria, particularly in conflict-sensitive reporting.
  • Experience in peacebuilding, governance, humanitarian, or development communication.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
  • Proficiency in digital media strategies, social media management, and multimedia content creation.
  • Strong public speaking, crisis communication, and media relations experience.
  • Ability to engage with policymakers, donors, and community stakeholders.
  • Willingness to travel to project locations, including conflict-prone areas.
